Moving is said to be one of the top 10 stressful events in your life.Think about it: finding a new home, packing up, making sure you didn’t leave anything or anyone behind, making sure lights and water are turned on, unpacking and figuring out where everything is and the list goes on. I don’t know about you but that list has me stressed out already.
Now imagine doing all of that without having a clue about what’s going on. That’s pretty much what pets go through when they move with you. Moving is just as stressful for them. Here are some tips to help your pet during the move.
Move day is here!!! First things first don’t “misplace” your fur family members. Yes it happens and no opening every box to make sure you didn’t pack them isn’t crazy. Consider keeping your fur babies in a safe room with familiar items such as toys or a bed, food and water. If a safe room on both ends of the move are just going to result in a freak out consider a family friends home. Nothing says time to get spoiled then going to see that family friend with lots of hiding places and new things to chew on.
If you are keeping your pets at the moving locations make sure that your safe room is locked or blocked off. The last thing you want is to see that cute little ball of fur racing around and bolt for the front door. Personally, I would be putting caution or hazardous material tape all over the door. Nothing says “do you really want to risk it” like some bright yellow tape.
Once all the chaos of the physical move has ceased (happy dance time), give limited access to the new home. Everyone has to adjust and unwind. Some much needed hugs, treats and a comfy bed to start, yes this includes you.
Helping your pet have a smooth, stress free move is essential. Haven’t you ever heard “If my fur baby isn’t happy, nobody’s happy”? Happy moving!
